    photo of Judy Gerber Judith Gerber serves of counsel to the law firm of Goldstein, Ackerhalt & Pletcher, LLP, in Buffalo, New York. She holds the degree of Juris Doctor from the University of Buffalo School of Law (1984), where she graduated magna cum laude and received a faculty award for outstanding contribution to the law school. She is an honors graduate of Princeton University (1980) and holds a certificate in Alternative Dispute Resolution from Cornell University. In her legal practice, Ms. Gerber specializes in the area of special education law, providing legal services both to parents of students with disabilities and school districts.

    Ms. Gerber previously served as chief legal counsel to the Buffalo Public School District and was engaged in its efforts to implement special education legal reforms. She also worked for the New York State Judicial Commission on Justice for Children, spearheading its statewide initiative to address the educational needs of children in foster care. Early in her career, Ms. Gerber served as a judicial law clerk for the New York State Court of Appeals in Albany. As an adjunct faculty member at Buffalo State College, Ms. Gerber teaches special education law in the post-masters degree Educational Leadership Program. She is a former faculty member of the University of Buffalo Law School, where she taught special education law and supervised the law school clinic. Ms. Gerber has also served as a trainer for New York State special education mediators.

    Ms. Gerber frequently conducts presentations and trainings in special education law to parents and professionals. She is often engaged to serve as a consultant and trainer for various state and local agencies, such as the New York State Unified Court System, the Center for the Development of Human Services and Erie County Family Court. She has authored various publications and training curricula regarding education of children and youth in foster care and the juvenile justice system. Ms. Gerber is currently serves on both the New York State Permanent Judicial Commission on Justice for Children and the Erie County Foster Care Education Commission. She is a member of the board of directors of Neighborhood Legal Services and Yad B'Yad. As former President of the Western New York Chapter of the Women's Bar Association, Ms. Gerber also served as chair of the chapter's Programs Committee and Parental Leave Committee. She was also appointed to serve as a member of the Peer Professional Standards Committee for the Assigned Counsel Program of the Erie County Bar Association. In 1994, Business First recognized Ms. Gerber for her professional achievements and contributions to the local community, designating her as one of its "Forty under Forty."
