Mr. Ackerhalt concentrates his practice primarily in the areas of special education law, representing families of children with disabilities and school districts, the rights of persons with disabilities, including the Americans with Disabilities Act, the Rehabilitation Act, and the National Childhood Vaccine Act, guardianships and health care law.
Mr. Ackerhalt attained his Juris Doctor degree at the State University of New York at Buffalo (1973) and was a member of the Buffalo Law Review. Thereafter, he was admitted to the New York State Bar (1974), the United States District Court for the Western District of New York (1977) and the United States Court of Federal Claims (1993). Previously, he received his Bachelors of Arts degree at Rutgers University (1968) and his Masters of Arts degree in economics at the State University of New York at Buffalo (1970).
Mr. Ackerhalt is a member of the Erie County Bar Association where he serves on the Committee on the Disabled and is a member of the Western New York Disability Law Coalition. In 2003, Mr. Ackerhalt co-authored "Know Your Child's Special Education Rights" published in Volta Voices, the
national magazine of the Alexander Graham Bell Association. He is also a contributor to the legal treatise: Legal Rights of Persons with Disabilities: An Analysis of Federal Law.
